Former director-general of the Nigeria Law School Dr. Kole Abayomi has died in the United Kingdom (UK) after contracting coronavirus.
His death was said to have been followed in quick succession by those of four other Nigerians in the U.K
Their names were given as Alfa Saadu, Adeola Onasanya, Carol Jamabo and Chidinma Olajide.
Abayomi died on Thursday, April 2, a statement by the secretary of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), Seyi Sowemimo, SAN, disclosed.
He was said to have gone to the U.K for his annual medical check-up.
“The BOSAN Secretariat wishes to announce the death of Dr Koleade A. Abayomi SAN, OON, who died in the early hours of today, 2nd of April, 2020 in London,†Sowemimo said.
“We deeply mourn the sad loss of our departed colleague and pray that the Almighty God grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss,†the statement read.
Abayomi’s friends and family members were reportedly thrown into a mourning period as he was described as a good fellow, who would be missed by all.
Abayomi was born on the 20th of August, 1940. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1966 and admitted to the Inner Bar in 2005.
He taught at the Nigerian Law School and rose to the position of Director-General in November 2004.
“He retired in 2005 and went into private practice and consultancy in Lagos until his death. He’s survived by his wife, children and great-grandchildren,†Sowemimo said.
One of his colleagues. Dele Adesina SAN said Abayomi held the ideals, values and virtues of the Legal Profession exceedingly high.
“Dr Kole Abayomi SAN built his reputation on what was all the way positive such as proud parentage, sound legal education, high standard of legal practice, elegance, decorum and self-confidence. These qualities will remain indelible in our hearts,†Adesina said in a separate statement.
His father, Oloye Sir Kofoworola Adekunle “Kofo†Abayomi Kt M.D. (10 July 1896 – 1 January 1979) was a Nigerian ophthalmologist and politician.
He was one of the founders of the nationalist Lagos Youth Movement in 1934 and went on to have a distinguished public service career.
Report had it that a 68-year-old Nigerian doctor, Alfa Saadu also died on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, in the UK after contracting Coronavirus.
Another UK-based Nigerian, Adeola Onasanya reportedly died of the dreaded Coronavirus on Wednesday 1st April, 2020.
His death was announced by UK-based Yoruba Community associates of the deceased.
Adeola was a resident of the U.K with own home and businesses (including an African food store) in Sittingbourne, Kent.
He was aged 54, and he had worked as IT consultant all over the UK & Europe.
The product of Abeokuta Grammar School was divorced, and he was survived by sons.
Two more Nigerians in the UK; Carol Jamabo and Chidinma Olajide also reportedly passed away from the dreaded Coronavirus on Thursday April 2 same day as Dr. Kole Abayomi.
It was alleged that Ms Jamabo, who was an NHS worker, might have contracted the virus while at work.
She attended Federal Government Girls College Abuloma, near Port Harcourt in River State, from where she graduated in 1980.
Ms Olajide on her part, attended Federal Government Girls College Owerri, from where she graduated in 2002.
Her death was the more tragic as she reportedly left behind an eight month old baby.
Although no formal figures of how many Nigerians in the UK have died from the virus are available, there may be as many as a dozen, given the large number of them that work in the National Health Service (NHS).
Sources close to some Nigerians in the country revealed that the death toll has kept increasing as no cure has yet been found for the disease that has claimed thousands of lives.
