Home / College Guide / Book Recommendations Based on Zodiac Signs!
Posted on Monday, September 16 @ 00:00:14 PDT
    College

Hi all! Today I’m bringing you a really exciting blog post that I worked super hard on, researching a whole bunch because I’m Extra: book recommendations based on your zodiac sign! Yes, all 12! Because I’m That Extra! If you’re not someone who believes in astrology, never fear! You can still enjoy these book recommendations, a collection of some of my favourite books. I tried to match a book or its characters to a zodiac sign, but I might have gotten some wrong as I’m not someone who knows a lot about astrology. This is just for some fun! So if you’re someone who knows a lot about astrology, please don’t be upset if I’ve gotten something incorrect — I tried! Anyway, here we go! March 21 – April 19 There’s a reason why Aries is the first sign on the Zodiac and that’s because they love being first. Aries’s are ambitious and quite bold, pushing themselves into challenging situations, usually with a cheery disposition. Aries’s are very motivated, passionate about the things they like, and are very determined. But sometimes they get bogged down by the unnecessary details and fixate on unimportant things.

Aries’s are natural born leaders, sometimes leading with blind optimism and impulsiveness. They tend to act first and think later, which results in learning lessons the hard ways. They also have a tendency to be a little selfish sometimes, with adhering to the philosophy of “every person for themselves”, but they’re also the first person you want backing your corner in a fight. Aries is ruled by Mars, which means they have a pretty bad temper which can be satiated quickly. Once they’ve dealt with their anger, Aries’s can be positive and playful. Book recs: Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston Alex Claremont-Diaz is the son of America’s first female President and he has a perfect image for the White House. But there’s one problem: Prince Henry of England, and when the tabloids get hold of a photo of the two if them in a fight, it affects U.S./British relations. So the two men are forced to become best friends to save face, but before they know it, they’ve started to fall in love. Why I chose it: The second you meet Alex Claremont-Diaz, you’ll know he’s 100% an Aries. He’s loud, opinionated, quick to anger, but a massive sweetheart too.

He’s fun to be around, he loves whole-heartedly, and he’s incredibly passionate. Jade City by Fonda Lee Magical jade is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. For centuries, Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their abilities and defend the island. But the war is over and a new generation of Kauls and Green Bones vie for control of the island’s capital city, and when another Green Bone family oversteps their boundaries, all out war breaks out. Why I chose it: This massive fantasy book has Aries written all over it, primarily in the form of Kaul Hiloshudon. This man can go from loving and friendly to be cutting off someone’s hand in a heartbeat. He is fiercely loyal to those he loves and you definitely want this guy on your side in a fight. But if you betray him, you’re dead to him. Or he’ll kill you. Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi Sana is a cheerleader and a straight A student, the ultimate overachiever. Rachel is a wannabe director who’s found her perfect lead in Sana. Too bad she hates Sana with every fibre of her being. Why I chose it: Enemies to lovers is probably key Aries, especially when it comes to the two main characters in this book.

Both girls exhibit classic Aries behaviours. Rachel is fiery and constantly defensive: she sees the bad in everyone at the beginning, until she lets them in. And Sana is a massive overachiever, very ambitious and has a cheery disposition. April 20 – May 20 Taurus is an earth sign and so they feel most at home surrounded by nature, or a quiet relaxing place. Taurus is ruled by Venus, which means Taurus’s treasure love, beauty, sensuality and money. They adore comfort, luxury and pleasure, and love to be pampered. But that doesn’t mean they don’t like hard work! Taurus’s can very ambitious and resilient, working to ensure their comfort and for rewards. They play the long game, both in their professional and romantic lives. Security is very important for a Taurus. Taurus’s are very loyal and steadfast. You can definitely rely on them, although sometimes they can see a bit stubborn and will go pretty far just to prove a point. Sometimes its hard for them to step outside their comfort zone, but once they do, they’ll loosen up. But they’re great partners to have, incredibly trustworthy and devoting. Taurus’s are very sensible and brave, and are amazing friends to have.

Book recs: If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio Oliver has spent ten years in jail for a murder he may or may not have committed. The day he’s released, he’s greeted by the man who put in him jail and the Detective wants to know what really happened all those years ago. As one of seven young actors at an elite arts college, Oliver and his friends were closer than most … until one of them winds up dead. Why I chose it: Taurus’s have very strong friendships and even though this book features a murder, the friendship ties are also super important. I also believe that Oliver is a Taurus: once he’s put outside of his comfort zone (playing the side characters, and being forced into the spotlight as the main character), he comes alive. The Soldier’s Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian Jack was born into a life of crime and will do anything to keep him and his siblings safe, using the kinds of skills the aristocrats need from a scoundrel. Even though he hates the aristocracy more than anything. Oliver is a gentleman soldier who is so happy to be back in England, away from the horrors of war. But when he comes across Jack, he is appalled by this man’s flouting of the law.

So he tries to get closer to Jack to make sure the criminal behaves, but finds himself falling for him instead. Why I chose it: I chose this book because Jack is one of the most loyal characters ever, and Taurus’s are known for their loyalty. He’s also very stubborn and wants nothing more than to live a life of comfort and security. He’s someone you can rely on. And Oliver is someone who will go far just to prove a point — and that point is that Jack is a criminal and if it means spending time with the man to prove that, he will. Graham’s Delicacies by Mina Waheed An anthology based in a bakery! ‘Saccharine’ is about Jen who is back at work and worrying about college, but loves to watch Emilie bake. But can Jen’s anxiety make it past their first hurdle? ‘Delectable’ is about James who’s never been kissed, but he wants to be, especially by his co-worker Sam. ‘Ravenous’ is about Alex who wants to protect their bakery from a foodie named Yujin with a video camera, but their pride might be preventing them from a romance. Why I chose it: Taurus’s are really in tune with their sense of taste and usually love to bake! So a book set in a bakery is the perfect book for any Taurus.

Taurus’s treasure love, beauty and sensuality and in Graham’s Delicacies , each character is taken by the beauty of their love interests, and love. May 21 – June 20 Gemini is an air sign and Geminis are interested in so many things, they’d need a double of themselves to get it done. Which makes sense because they’re symbolised by celestial twins. Geminis are often misrepresented as two-faced when in reality they’re anything but. Geminis are pretty playful and curious about many things, juggling a variety of interests, hobbies, friend groups and careers. They’re social butterflies and can talk to anyone about anything. Geminis are pioneers, and always at the forefront of a creative project, down to try anything new. However, they do have short attention spans and can move quickly to their next idea. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the messenger, which means that communication is very important to them. They’re constantly texting and talking, but they have to remember to be thoughtful with their words. But they can recover quickly from any embracing misstep by being a natural chameleon. Book recs: The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli 17-year-old Molly has twenty-six crushes, but all of them are a secret.

She can’t stand the idea of being rejected, so she’s careful because fat girls have to be careful to protect their hearts. But then Molly’s twin sister Cassie gets a girlfriend, and Cassie tries to bring her and Molly together again by getting Molly with her girlfriend’s friend, Will. And Molly likes him, but she also likes her new co-worker Reid. Why I chose it: This sweet YA novel is about two sisters who are slowly moving in different directions, which is perfect for Geminis — because there’s two of them … get it? Anyway, Molly also has a variety of interests, plus a lot of crushes, and Geminis are known for their ability to juggle so many interests. Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu Bitty is a former junior ice skating champion, vlogging extraordinaire and amateur p â tissier. He’s now a freshman at university and on the hockey team, and what scares him the most is checking. But then there’s also Jack, his new team’s moody but very attractive team captain. Why I chose it: Bitty is a sweetheart and if he’s not a Gemini, I’ll eat my shoe. Bitty is super social, always wants to help people, is ready with a solution (or a pie), and is constantly getting himself into sticky situations.

Communication is also very important for him and I can’t say why without spoiling the graphic novel/webcomic a little bit. Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde Charlie likes to stand out: she’s a vlogger and an actress who’s about to promote her first movie at Supercon. When famous actress Alyssa Huntington arrives as a surprise guest, Charlie finds out that her long-time crush isn’t one-sided. Taylor prefers to blend in. She’s autistic and hates change, but at least she has her friends Charlie and Jamie (who she has a crush on). And when she finds out about a cosplay contest for her favourite fandom, Taylor begins to rethink many things. Why I chose it: Books with dual perspectives are perfect for Geminis. This book features two very different protagonists who encapsulate Gemini attributes: Charlie is social and constantly communicating; while Taylor is curious about a lot of things, has many interests and is a natural chameleon — until she learns how to step outside her comfort zone. June 21 – July 22 Cancer is a water sign and they’re highly intuitive, meaning that they’re able to pick up on people’s energies as soon as they walk into a room.

Cancers are sensitive to their environments, and also very self-protective. When you first met them, Cancers can come across as cold or distant, but once you get to know them, you’ll realise that they’re very gentle, compassionate and caring. Cancer is ruled by the moon and are more domestically orientated than other signs. They enjoy making safe spaces in their homes and take care to make sure everyone feels welcome and cozy. Cancers care about their families and will often be the caregiver in any friendship group or relationship. But sometimes their nurturing can come across as controlling. Cancers are loyal and very committed. They hate and try to avoid conflict, so much so that they are a bit passive-aggressive. It’s hard to get Cancers to talk about something they don’t want to, but if you can, you’ll have their trust for life. Book recs: I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver When Ben comes out to their parents as nonbinary, they’re thrown out of their home and forced to move in with their estranged older sister, Hannah, and her husband, Thomas. Ben struggles with an anxiety disorder, so they only come out to Hannah, Thomas and their new therapist.

Ben tries to survive the last half of senior year unnoticed and being constantly misgendered, but that plan is throated when they meet Nathan, a funny and charismatic student who takes Ben under his wing. Why I chose it: I chose this book because Ben is definitely a Cancer: they’re not big on adventures and prefers the home, but once you get them out of their comfort zone, you’ve got an adventure. Ben doesn’t back down from a tough task, even when it’s very difficult, and they’re brave and very creative. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee Monty is a gentleman but he’s never been tamed, not even by England’s boarding schools or his abusive father. He’s usually at a gambling hell, drinking, and then waking up in the arms of women or men. But then Monty’s sent on a Grand Tour of Europe with his best friend, Percy, and his younger sister, Felicity — which is harder than he thought it would be, considering her’s in love with Percy. And Monty’s determined to make this a great year. Why I chose it: I chose this book because once you get Monty, Percy and Felicity out of their comfort zones, they have a massive adventure — even though they almost die multiple times, they manage to persevere instead.

Monty can comes across as rude until you get to know him and you find out he’s very gentle and loving and sweet. Percy, on the other hand, is the real caregiver of his little found family, and he’s very trustworthy. On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta Taylor is the leader of the boarders at Jellicoe School. As the leader, she now has to deal with the annual territory wars, and dealing with Jonah Griggs, a boy she hasn’t seen in years and who betrayed her. And now Hannah, the one person Taylor could rely on, has disappeared and Taylor’s only clue is a manuscript about five teenagers in Jellicoe from 18 years ago. Why I chose it: I love this book so much, and its definitely a great representation of the Cancer star sign. Taylor is very sensitive to her environment, and even more self-protective. Until you get to know her and realise she’s loving, she comes across as very cold and distant — but that’s just because she’s been betrayed by so many people in her life and needs to protect herself. She prefers spending time at home, but once she goes outside, she thrives and has an adventure. July 23 – August 22 Leo is a fire sign and one of the more powerful zodiacs.

There’s a reason Leo is represented by a lion, the kings and queens of the jungle. And they really do embrace this kind of royal status: Leos are natural leaders, love the spotlight, are very passionate and theatrical. They enjoy drama-fuelled friendships and romances, but one’s that are also playful. Leo is ruled by the sun and like the Sun, Leos are known for their stability and loyalty. They’re very dedicated to whomever they give their heart to — either platonically or romantically — and enjoy watching them succeed, but sometimes they feel threatened. Leos can be affected by their egos, pride and even jealousy, and it takes time for them to realise that someone else’s success doesn’t eclipse their own. Leos have quite a big hubris that they need to deal with. Leos have a lot of ambition, but they’re mainly known for their bravery. They’re very optimistic and refuse to accept failure. Like the lion, they’re incredibly courageous and strong, and grow more as they mature. Book recs: Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat Damen is a war hero to his people, and the rightful heir to the Akielon throne. But when his half brother seizes power, Damen is stripped of his identity and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a slave.

His new master is Prince Laurent, beautiful and manipulative. Damen soon finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, and soon has to work with Laurent to survive and save his country. Why I chose it: Damen is the ultimate hero and like all Leos, he’s very bold, powerful and uses his power and strength to overcome any challenge. He definitely makes sure no one is left behind, he’s that douchebag that is leading people to victory, and he’s definitely a Gryffindor! If anyone is a Leo, it’s Damianos of Akielos. The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty Nahri has never believed in magic, but when she accidentally summons a djinn warrior called Dara, she finally accepts that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. And that she’s a part of that world. Dara identifies Nahri as the long lost daughter of a powerful Daeva, and brings her to Daevabad, a magical city run by djinn. There, Nahri meets Prince Ali and is caught up in political schemes that she doesn’t want to. Why I chose it: Nahri is a very bold young woman; she has to be after all those years spent conning people out of money. She uses her boldness and power to overcome the many challenges she’s forced into.

And she becomes the leader of her people, the Daevas, and many Leos are natural-born leaders — it takes Nahri some time to accept her place in this world, but once she does, she’s a great and respected leader. Leo Loves Aries by Anyta Sunday Theo usually laughs at the horoscopes his mother sends him. He’s still hung up on his ex-girlfriend and has no friends aside from his twin sister, so when his sister challenges him to find her the perfect date for a wedding, Theo uses this as a chance to make new friends. Theo’s previous economics tutor, Jaime, is looking for a roommate and Theo offers him a place in his and his sister’s home. Perhaps this guy might be his sister’s perfect match, and a new friend for Theo … Why I chose it: Well, Theo is a Leo in this book and he encompasses the Leo perfectly. He’s very loud and bold, but he absolutely loves a challenge. He’s super passionate about the things he’s interested in, and super dramatic and theatrical. He’s playful and proud, and never accepts failure. August 23 – September 22 Virgo is an earth sign, and they’re very logical and practical in their approach to life.

Virgos are perfectionists and enjoy improving their skills through constant practice. They’re aware of all the little details in everything, from cooking, to writing, to their personal interests. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, so communication is key. But while Gemini is also ruled by Mercury, Virgo views communication differently. Virgos deal with information the same way a computer might, a lot of input and processing and putting things into organised concepts. Although Virgos are meticulous in all things, they need to learn that flaws are not bad. Sometimes they’re so caught up in chasing after an ideal, they forget this. Above all, Virgos crave help from gentle and supportive friends, family and lovers. Virgos are very intelligent and resourceful, and love to problem-solve. They’re very hardworking and are committed to everything they do. Virgos also love the outdoors, and are happiest when they’re surrounded by nature. Book recs: The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden In a tiny village at the edge of the wilderness of northern Russia, a young girl named Vasya is the daughter of a lord, but nothing has ever been able to contain her wildness. Her elderly caretaker tells stories of sorcery and the Winter King, old magic that the church looks down upon.

When her father is gifted a necklace by a mysterious stranger and told to give it to Vasya to care until he needs it again, Vasya’s father worries that the Winter King has set his sight on his daughter. Why I chose it: Vasta is definitely a Virgo: she works extremely hard and adores nature — she spends a majority of her days out in the wilderness, to the chagrin of everyone in her family. She’s very analytical and logical, but as this book is set during the 1400s in Russia, women are treated as uneducated, so she’s often ignored. Vasya is also the problem-solver in her village, and even when people don’t want her to, she fixes their issues. Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur A collection of poetry about survival, violence, abuse, love, loss and femininity. Kaur’s collection is split into four chapters, each dealing with a different pain and heartache. Milk and Honey takes readers on a journey from the bitter moments in life to the sweeter ones. Why I chose it: This is a story about survival, love and healing and Virgos know a bit about that. Virgos need validation and support from friends and family, and one of the ways Kaur heals in this book is through support.

This collection of poetry also focuses on inner purpose and finding a way to solve devastating problems. The Secret History by Donna Tartt Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever eccentric students at an elite university rediscover an ancient way of thinking and living. But when they go beyond the boundaries of morality and murder someone, the bounds between the group begin to crack and they slip into obsession, corruption, betrayal and evil. Why I chose it: I would say a lot of the characters in this novel are Virgos, primarily Henry Winters and Julian Morrow, the professor. Both are very cold, analytical people who work extremely hard to become the best in their fields. They also adore exploring the outdoors, have very keen observation skills and love to solve things. September 23 – October 22 Libra is an air sign and they’re represented by the scales, which is why Libras are known for being balanced and harmonic. Libras are ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty and money, so they adore art and intellectualism. Some Libras need to have material objects in their environments. Relationships are important for Libras, whether that relationship is romantic or platonic; so long as the relationship is harmonious.

Libras can be quite flirty and have a need to keep everyone happy. Sometimes, they find that they want to push the limits of their relationships, which can cause issues. Some Libras are people-pleasers and often forget that their own happiness and the happiness of their loved ones is more important than validation from strangers. Libras are great at leading new initiatives, although sometimes they struggle with indecision. They need to learn to trust their own intuition, rather than seeking outside opinions. That being said, Libras are social people and can successfully navigate any social situation with their natural charm. Book recs: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas Starr Carter lives between two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she lives and the fancy school she attends. The balance between these worlds is broken when she witnesses the shooting of her friend by a white police officer. He friend was unarmed. Very soon, his death is a national headline and Starr and her family are pressured by police and the local drug lord to keep quiet about what happened that night. Why I chose it: Libras are known as the balanced sign, as represented by the scales, and Starr spends a majority of this novel trying to balance the two different worlds she inhabits.

Starr is also someone who is indecisive throughout the book because she has so many people trying to tell her what she should do, but she finally learns to listen to her own intuition. It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover Lily has had a hard life but that doesn’t stop her from working hard for what she wants: starting her own business. When she meets neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly becomes too good to be true. She finds herself falling in love very quickly, but Ryle’s behaviour starts to change and he becomes abusive. At the same time, Lily’s long-lost love comes back into her life. Why I chose it: This book is told in two different time points: the present and the past; both are Lily’s stories, but one from her childhood and the other from her adult years. She struggles deeply to balance the person she used to be with the person she now wants to be, which is classic Libra. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro Hailsham seems like a perfect English boarding school, where its students are well looked after, trained in art and literature. But they’re taught nothing of the outside world and are allowed barely any contact with it.

Kathy grows up at Hailsham with her best friends Ruth and Tommy; and as they grow into adults, the friends finally learn the truth about what Hailsham is. Why I chose it: I chose this book because Kathy is definitely a Libra: she enjoys material things (only because she doesn’t have access to many of them) and her friendships are extremely important to her. She also spends a majority of the novel trying to balance her life at Hailsham with moving into the real world, especially when she finds out the truth about her school. October 23 – November 21 Scorpio tends to be one of the most misunderstood signs. Many people immediately think of it as a fire sign, but did you know Scorpio is actually a water sign? Scorpios gain most of their strength from the psychic and emotional realms, they’re very intuitive, perhaps even clairvoyant. However, unlike other water signs, Scorpios have a strong sting, representative of the scorpion. Scorpios tend to lie in wait and strike when the time is right, which often makes people think that they’re wicked. But that’s because Scorpios know what they want and they go after it. They’re quite enigmatic which makes them very charming.

Scorpios are often associated with sex, but it’s more accurate to say that they appreciate emotional intimacy and physical closeness with someone. Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, the planet that focuses on destruction and transformation. So Scorpios can be very ambitious, but they can also have a desire for control. Scorpios often find themselves controlled by their own egos, but once they’re able to build trust with someone, they’re very empathetic and committed. Book recs: The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin Three terrible things happen in one day: Essun comes home to find that her husband has murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter; the Sanze Empire collapses and most of its citizens are murdered by a madman’s vengeance; and across the Stillness, a rift has been torn into the earth, which will continue growing for centuries, destroying the planet. Essun must travel across the dying planet to save her daughter. Why I chose it: Essun is definitely a Scorpio: she is quite controlling, but that’s because she wants to protect her children. She’s also very ambitious, travelling across a dying planet to save her child, to the detriment of herself; she’ll even destroy the planet herself if that’s what it takes.

However, she’s also quite empathetic and once she finds a partner or friend, she’s committed to them. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid Ageing and reclusive Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell her life story, and the seven husbands she had along the way. And when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, everyone is surprised, even Monique. Monique listens to Evelyn tell her fascinating life story, from the 50s to the 80s, forming a connection with the star, until she finds out a secret connection between them. Why I chose it: Evelyn is definitely a Scorpio: she is driven by her ambition, so much so that she’s willing to step on people to get her way; and she lies in wait for the perfect time to strike. Emotional intimacy is also very important to her and she adores her lover, even though her controlling behaviour affects them. Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters Nan King, an oyster girl, is captivated by music hall performer Kitty Butler, a male impersonator. Nan manages to visit all of her shows and finally meets her — there’s a connection between them immediately and soon Nan becomes Kitty’s dresser, and finally, performs right alongside her.

This sparks off Nan’s sexual and gender journey. Why I chose it: Nan exudes Scorpio energy and so does almost every character in this book. Nan starts the novel off as a very naive girl who wants more in her life, but doesn’t know how to reach out for it, until she meets Kitty. Then she reaches out and seeks out everything she wants in life, although she does find herself sometimes controlled by her ego. November 22 – December 21 Sagittarius’s have a strong thirst for knowledge — intellectual, spiritual, geographical — and like their representation of the archer, they’re a fire sign. They’re the sign that is most likely inspired by wanderlust. They’re ruled by Jupiter, which is the planet of growth and spirituality. Sagittarius’s are wonderful storytellers and are often the centre of attention, regaling people with their stories. They have the ability to draw people to them through their sense of humour, but they also have a bluntness to them. Sometimes, they have to remember to keep their mouths closed, because sometimes they may come across as arrogant. Sagittarius’s are also very flexible and can handle change very easily; this is because they’re natural explorers and want the freedom to move.

Book recs: The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi It’s 1889 and treasure hunter Séverin Montagnet-Alaire is offered a treasure he’s never imagined: he’s true inheritance. He’s the only surviving member of his family, who was once part of the Order of Babel until he had his inheritance stripped from him. To hunt down this treasure, he calls upon his friends, a group of unlikely experts. Why I chose it: This book is all about intellectual and historical knowledge, which is so fascinating. Ancient history comes alive in this book, along with travel and wanderlust. Séverin’s team of treasure hunters come from diverse countries and cultures, all of whom regale people with their fascinating stories. Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnus Nutter, Witch , the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday to be exact, just before dinner. The armies of Good and Evil are forming and Atlantis is rising, but a fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not looking forward to the Rapture and are trying to prevent it. But, they’ve accidentally misplaced the Antichrist. Why I chose it: Both Aziraphale and Crowley have a strong thirst for knowledge and have travelled the world over — they’ve been on Earth since the Garden of Eden, after all.

They’re both amazing storytellers, although Crowley really should learn to keep his mouth closed, while Aziraphale is incredibly spiritual. Work for It by Talia Hibbert Griffin is an outcast in his village, a giant who prefers plants to people. Olu is a stranger from the city, sharp-tongued and sophisticated, who has problems with people touching him. When Griffin and Olu meet, Olu insults the man and thinks that’s the end of that, until he keeps bumping into Grifiin. Why I chose it: I chose this book because Olu often lets his mouth get the better of him, but its just to hide a scarred heart and trauma. He’s also travelled the world over, never feeling settled until he’s in a different country. And Griffin has always wanted to travel, but has never had the opportunity to do so, but he craves freedom more than anything. December 22 – January 19 Capricorn is an earth sign, and have a strong inner fortitude that allows them reach for their long-term goals. They have incredible focus, which can sometimes come across as cold or unemotional, and they need to be reminded that compassion is just as important. Capricorns are ruled by Saturn, and they’ve often experienced hardships in their lives.

Some Capricorns can become more optimistic as they age, as they’re slowly overcoming their difficulties. Some Capricorns are mischievous and troublemakers, even though they come across as conservative at first, until you get to know them. Capricorns are great at taking action and have a very can-do attitude. They’re great leaders, but sometimes they can be a bit too work-focused. Capricorns need to balance a work-life schedule, and start connecting more with the people around them. Book recs: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte Orphaned as a child, Jane has felt like an outcast her whole young life. When she moves to Thornfield Hall to work as a governess, her courage is tested as the bumps heads with the brooding Edward Rochester. Yet Jane finds herself drawn to him too and falls in love with him. But then a horrible secret is revealed, and Jane worries she’ll be left alone again. Why I chose it: Jane is an incredibly compassionate person, but until you get to know her, she definitely comes across as cold — and that’s because she’s quite shy. And she’s definitely experienced her fair-share of hardships, especially in her childhood, but she retains that optimistic personality.

How To Be a Normal Person by T.J. Klune Gustavo Tiberius is not a normal person; everyone in his small town knows this. He reads encyclopaedias, he has a pet ferret, he owns a video rental store that no one goes to, and his best friends are three elderly Vespa riders known as the We Three Queens. All he wants is to be left alone … until he meets Casey, the new guy in town who becomes obsessed with Gus. Casey, who’s a hipster and instagrams his food. But with Casey, Gus just might learn to step outside his comfort zone. Why I chose it: Gus is definitely a Capricorn: he has a very strong inner fortitude and focus. A lot of the time, people think he’s very cold and unemotional, and he can be, until you become one of his closest friends; then he loves you, even if he won’t say it. He definitely seems conservative, until you find out that his dad was a “pastor” who smoked weed. The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite As Lucy watches her ex-lover’s wedding, she wishes to be anywhere else. So when she receives a letter form the Countess of Moth looking for someone to translate a groundbreaking French astronomy text, she shows up at the Countess’s home for a challenge, but finds a woman who takes her breath away instead.

Why I chose it: The Countess of Moth, Catherine, is definitely a Capricorn. She’s someone who’s gone through a lot in her life and starts the novel off being very cold and distant, until she grows closer to Lucy. Lucy is very work-focused and throughout the novel she understands the value of connecting with people. January 20 – February 18 Aquarius is an air sign, which seems confusing because they’re represented by the water bearer who gives life. Which is why Aquarius’s are very humanitarian. They’re the zodiac sign that is very revolutionary and radical, wanting to change the world through social progress. A lot of Aquarius’s are rebels at heart who hate authority and tradition or conventions. They’re often quite eccentric and non-conformist. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus (lol), the planet that focuses on innovation and technology. So Aquarius’s are big thinkers, but need to make sure they don’t forget about the world around them. Sometimes they become so focused on their ideas that they neglect their friends and family. Aquarius’s are also quite stubborn, because they’re pretty righteous and love to exact change.

But Aquarius’s also need plenty of time and space on their own, and can feel chafed when prevented from this. They can view challenges to their independence as controlling, so the best way to win their trust, is to give them room. Book recs: Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor Lazlo Strange is a war orphan and junior librarian, who’s been obsessed with the magical lost city of Weep for years. When an opportunity presents itself to cross half the world in search of the city, Lazlo jumps at the chance, travelling with the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors. But what happened in Weep all those years ago? And why did the whole word forget its true name? And who’s the blue-skinned girl who shows up in his dreams? Why I chose it: Lazlo is a very creative person; he literally recreated the lost language of Weep from only a few words on paper. He’s a very big thinker and is very focused on his work, to the point where he bumps into walls because he’s reading while walking. He’s also very individual and is a rebel at heart, but it takes some courage for him to step out of his comfort zone. But once he does, he wants to change the world. The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo Xiomara feels unheard in her Harlem neighbourhood, especially when her body has developed curves and she’s learnt to let her fists and fierceness to the talking.

But she has plenty she wants to say, so she pours all of her frustration into her poetry. Then she falls for a boy from class and is invited to a slam poetry club, but she has to make sure he super religious, conservative mother doesn’t find out. Why I chose it: Xiomara is definitely an Aquarius: she’s incredibly individual but can’t find a way to showcase that, until she discovers slam poetry. She also despises tradition and conformity, and wants to forge her own way in the world. But her mother prevents that for her, and it takes a while before she realises that she needs to give Xiomara room to grow. Legend by Marie Lu What was once the western U.S. is now the Republic, a nation that is constantly at war. Born into an elite family, June is a prodigy being groomed for the Republic’s highest military circles. And Day is the country’s most wanted criminal, but his motives aren’t as malicious as they seem. June and Day cross paths when June’s brother is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect, but soon June thinks that he had nothing to do with it. Why I chose it: Aquarius’s probably feel most at home in a dystopian novel because those types of books are all about revolutions and changing the world, fighting back against conventions.

Day is incredibly righteous and is wanted by the Republic’s government because he rebels against their treatment of the lower classes. February 19 – March 20 Pisces is a water sign, and the last on the zodiac table. Pisces’s are represented by two fish swimming in different directions, which symbolises Pisces’s struggle between fantasy and reality. Pisces’s are very empathetic and compassionate, and sometimes they can be drowned by emotions so they need to take care to remain in reality. Pisces is ruled by Neptune, the planet that focuses on creativity and imagination. Pisces’s also have a deep focus on escapism through fantasy, but sometimes they can come across as flaky or with their head in the clouds. Pisces can adapt to their surroundings very quickly, and make friends just as quickly. They’re also incredibly kind and gentle, and enjoy music and spirituality. Pisces are always up for an adventure and exploring the world, even if it’s just in their imagination. Book recs: A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray Marguerite’s physicist parents created an astonishing invention called the Firebird, which allows people to jump into multiple universes.

But when Marguerite’s father is murdered, the killer — her parents’ assistant Paul — escapes into another dimension, Marguerite runs after him to bring him to justice. But in these other worlds, she meets a different side of herself and Paul, and realises that her father’s death might be more sinister than she expected. Why I chose it: I chose this book because it’s so imaginative, just like a Pisces. As Marguerite travels through different worlds, each more creative than the next, she realises that even though she’s tracking down her father’s supposed killer, she uses this technology as a chance to escape her life, and explores different worlds. The Wicker King by K. Ancrum When August learns that his best friend Jack shows signs of degenerative hallucinatory disorder, he’s determined to help Jack cope. But the only way to do that is to take part in Jack’s vivid visions that take form in a fantasy world that’s layered over our own, ruled by the Wicker King. As Jack leads them on a quest to fulfil a dark prophecy in this alternate world, August begins to question whether its real or not. Why I chose it: I chose this book because August and Jack spend a lot of time in Jack’s fantasy world, which is a by-product of Jack’s disorder.

Even so, August and Jack begin to prefer spending time in this imaginary world, because it’s a way to escape their difficult reality. Both boys are also incredibly gentle and compassionate, just wanting the best for each other. The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang Prince Sebastian is being forced to find a bride, but he spends most of his nights hiding his secret identity from everyone. At night, he puts on beautiful dresses and takes Paris by storm as Lady Crystallia. His secret weapon is his new friend, brilliant dressmaker Frances, who’s the only person who knows that Sebastian wears dresses. Why I chose it: This whole graphic novel is incredibly beautiful and creative with Sebastian struggling between his fantastical nights and reality. Frances is definitely a Pisces, as her creative gifts and focus on imagination takes form in her dresses, while Sebastian needs an escape from the difficulties of his life as a prince.
