    College

by Bailey Kahn, SSLI ‘23 Editor’s Note: For this week’s Motivational Monday , freshman writer Bailey Kahn interviewed Paw Print Now Editor-in-Chief Ethan Rogers about a program he partakes in throughout the school year. Bailey Kahn [BK]: Hi, Ethan! Can you share a little bit about your background as a Schechter student? Ethan Rogers [ER]: I have been in Schechter since Kindergarten. It was in K-2 where I met some of my best friends, and I feel so fortunate that I still get to spend every day with them in my senior year. As a whole, I love the Schechter community. I love going to a school where I know everyone’s name and feel comfortable approaching any faculty member with both academic and non-academic questions or concerns. In addition, I love the collaborative and engaging learning environment that Schechter provides, and I would not trade this for anything. Ethan at one of his favorite architectural sites, Fallingwater. (A. Khurana) BK: What activities do you partake in at school? ER: The most obvious answer is my role as editor-in-chief of Paw Print Now . You can find me editing every article nightly before sending them off to Mr. Thorgersen for posting.

I am also a captain for the Mock Trial team, a co-president for the Maker Space/Robotics Club, a captain for Mathletes, secretary for Students Against Destructive Decisions, a 9th grade Peer Connector, and a member of Tzibur Club, Israel Club, Paw Print Magazine, and Boys Interfaith. BK: Do you participate in additional activities outside of school? ER: I am heavily involved in USY. I serve as the Religion/Education Vice President for USY’s Metropolitan New York region. I am also a volunteer at the Plainview Library’s monthly LEGO Club and am a member of the ACE Mentor Program of America. BK: Can you expand specifically on what the ACE Mentor Program is? ER: The “ACE” in ACE Mentor Program stands for “Architecture, Construction, and Engineering.” This is an after-school program that allows high school students to delve into these three professional fields and get a sense of what a day-in-the-life of an architect, construction manager, or engineer is like. Students who apply are placed on teams at firms based on where they live. I am on Team 36 and have been since the beginning of my junior year. Team 36 is located at H2M architects + engineers in Melville.

BK: What do you do during the program? ER: My team meets every other Thursday at H2M. During the first few months each year, students learn about different aspects of design and construction in addition to hearing about professional fields from people who work in those fields at H2M. Later in the year, we divide up into small groups that focus on either architecture, civil engineering, structural engineering ... and, in our respective groups, work collectively to design a structure. Last year, we repurposed an old big-box store by conceptualizing an entertainment center featuring laser tag, bowling, and an arcade that could be put in that space. This year, we are designing a pavilion for Central Park. At the end of each year, our team presents our accomplishments with family and other local teams. BK: What do you gain from your experience? Do you aim to pursue a job in a related field? ER: I think that this program gives me a good idea of what it is like to work in a professional firm. I learn valuable collaboration and listening skills as I work with teenagers I just met this year who come from many different backgrounds. I do want to study architecture in college, so I think this program is a good start for me and my interest in the field.

BK: How do you feel being the only Schechter student on your team? Is there anything you want to emphasize about this program to the Schechter community? ER: I kind of like being the only Schechter student on my ACE team. ACE is one of the few activities I participate in that does not involve school friends, and I like how this program is therefore different as it allows me to branch out and escape my “Jewish-bubble.” At the same time, I would definitely promote this program to any Schechter students who are interested in fields such as architecture and engineering. The program is a great way to get an understanding of a specific field that resonates with you and to find out if that field is truly fit for you even before you enter college. If you want to learn more about ACE, please reach out to me! Bailey Kahn is a writer for Paw Print Now and has been published on the site since September 2019. Bailey is currently a freshman at the Schechter School of Long Island and can be reached at the following email address: bkahn23@ssdsnassau.org.
