Home / College Guide / MD - HELP! Might have really messed up by applying this cycle... WAMC |
Posted on Tuesday, September 22 @ 00:00:18 PDT |
Hello!
Im applying MD this cycle (my shadowing experience was cut short due to COVID and I do not have a physicians LoR, although to preface- I do understand DO is a more realistic goal given my stats). My AMCAS was verified on 9/4 and I have received (and started to work on) 20 secondaries so far. I had a VERY unfortunate MCAT retake (post-verification) and wanted to reach out and get some opinions and feedback. What are my realistic chances and if anyone could recommend any more schools to add to my list- thatd be great! Thank you TONS!
BCPM: 3.08
AO: 3.72
MCAT:
6/28/20 507 (126/128/126/127)
8/29/20 501 (124/127/125/125) ***
State of residence: Iowa
Ethnicity/race/gender: White, female
Undergrad: University of Iowa (BA in French Language, also studied Spanish)
Clinical experience: 150 hours Burn Trauma Unit volunteer mentor
Research experience: 1220 hours as a research assistant in biochemistry (905) and second-language acquisition (315)
Shadowing experience: 60 hours (pathology)
EC/leadership/employment: 1867 hours as a paid chemistry intern (lead lab prep in chem dept), 324 hours on the executive board of the university biology interest organization, 40 hours as a student teacher for the Blank Summer Institute, 6500 hours ** as a third shift line server (1500) and bartender (5000)
Other: University Honors, Honors in the Major (wrote a thesis in French), received two scholarships, two French translation publications
* Hours listed are from 08/2016 to 05/2020 *
** - I am fully financially independent (since I was 16) and always had two full time jobs to put myself through college.
My letters of recommendation also address the health issues/hospitalization I dealt with my junior and senior year. I feel both of these explain my sub-par stats (Do they ?)
*** - Do I address this score drop in my secondaries (additional comments essays)??? I feel I have a valid reason: I was hit head on the day before my retake by a guy who stole a car (he took a turn going 60 MPH while I was stopped at a light). Airbags deployed and I suffered a concussion, spent the night in the hospital, and was still mixing up words/had slurred speech when I took the exam the next day (taking the void and rescheduling was not an option financially for me). HOWEVER- since my LoRs already talk about my illness (I believe one professor specified- cancer), I do NOT want my application to come across as being full of sob-stories. I understand theres a difference between those and stories of overcoming adversity- but I feel that line is very thin...should I not even draw attention to this negative?
