This movie came to my attention when I was scrolling through Instagram and I had seen a video edit accompanied by some gorgeous Punjabi music. Currently, Shershaah (which means Lion King) is the most watched and highest rated Amazon Prime movie in India. And of course that really means nothing to Americans, but given my love of India , films set in India and other foreign productions , I was intrigued. Based on the true life account of Captain Vikram Batra and his heroism that was displayed during the 3 month Kargil War in 1999. Ever since he was a young boy, Vikram (or Vicky as hes called by friends and family) primary dream in life life was to join the army. Handsome, intelligent and fearless, Vicky has an easy going nature that forever draws people to him; he always knew what he wanted and how to pursue it with no thought of giving up. Whether its advancing in the military or getting the attention of beautiful Dimple Cheema, his true love that he met in college. Before the army became a reality, Vickys heart was set on marrying lively Dimple who knew how to keep him in line. However, their brief courtship was broken by Dimples disapproving father. In spite of everything, Dimple continued to supports Vickys dream and Vicky continued to hold out hope that they will one day marry and have a happy life together.

For years, Pakistan was relentless in its desire to control India and enemy forces were setting siege on small country towns, striking fear into the lives of the citizens. Pakistans ruthlessness only kindled Vickys fiery passion to defend his country and he started to rise in the ranks. When the Kirgil War broke out in the spring/summer of 1999, Bantra and his unit went above and beyond the call of duty for their country and their people. Its understandable that this film has received so much praise in India given its production excellence. The chemistry among the actors was really felt. From Vickys own family, his brothers in arms and his blossoming romance with Dimple were all wonderfully acted out. And the soundtrack and score! They were amazing! The story itself was simple and to the point. In the midst of the blood and warfare, their is peace and happiness with Dimple as she becomes his constant strength and support. I love stories about people, people who made an impact whether its through service to their country or an unexpected marriage and Shershaah just had all the fine qualities that brought justice to one of Indias most honored and loved heroes.
