BILLERICA — The annual Sean C. Elmore Memorial Fund fundraiser will return this Friday after taking a year off because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fundraiser, in its 32nd year, raises money for scholarships for Billerica high school students and other educational projects. Over the decades, Elmore’s family has raised more than $550,000 in his memory and distributed more than 500 scholarships to students at Billerica Memorial High School and Shawsheen Valley Technical High School, as well as funded projects like the dugouts and digital scoreboards at the baseball field at Marshall Middle School. Elmore, a former BMHS basketball star, died at the age of 30 in 1989 from complications of Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue. That same year, the first fundraiser was held in the form of a three-on-three basketball game. Since then, Elmore’s younger brother, Steve, has kept the tradition alive, working hard to solicit donations from around the community. Steve’s son, Sean, who was born just a few months after his uncle’s death and was named after him, said that Steve works throughout October and November to meet people and spread the word about the fund.

“He’s a one-man crew,” Sean said. He added that while they had to skip the event last year, they hope that this year’s fundraiser brings people back. “We’re hoping to get a good turnout, even with the weird times that we’re in,” he said. Friday’s fundraiser will include live music from local band Diezel, food, a silent auction and raffles. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Billerica Elks Lodge. Tickets are $20 or $10 for college students and will be available at the door. Donations can also be made at elmorefund.com.
