The match marked the beginning of a new Grand Slam season for Osaka, who said after the 2021 U.S. Open that she was thinking of taking another break from the sport. Osaka went up 5-0 in the first set Sunday before Osorio pushed back, eventually closing the set out 6-3 in 31 minutes. Osorio kept things closer early in the second set, keeping on Osakas tail until the former world No. 1 was up 4-3, then went on to win 6-3. Osaka had 28 unforced errors to Osorios 15 in the effort. The 24-year-old Osaka announced ahead of the 2021 French Open last May that she would not be participating in the mandatory post-match press conferences at the event because they negatively impacted her mental health. After her first-round win in Paris, she did indeed skip her press conference, was fined and drew threats of further punishment from organizers of all four Grand Slam events.

Osaka then withdrew from the tournament and said she would be taking a break from the sport. The four-time Grand Slam champion sat out of Wimbledon, but represented Japan at the Tokyo Olympics , where she lit the Olympic cauldron and lost in the third round. She turned to Grand Slam action at the U.S. Open, where she was the defending champion, and was upset in the third round by teenager Leylah Fernandez. Osaka said after the loss that she didnt know when she would be playing tennis again. “Recently when I win I don’t feel happy,” she said. I feel more like a relief. When I lose I feel very sad and I don’t think that’s normal. (Photo: Cameron Spencer / Getty Images) Naomi Osaka is drawling a line in the sand by prioritizing her mental health.
