MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – We are less than a month away from the start of the Memphis Showboats football season. Thursday was move day for the start of training camp. Players and staff will be staying at the East Memphis hotel for the upcoming season, which begins next month. “Like a kid approaching a candy store, the anticipation starts to drool a little bit,” said Showboats quarterback and former Memphis Tiger Brady White. The season starts on April 15, but the city’s economic growth really begins now. “Certainly staying at the hotel, using our transportation and buses, you know football teams like to eat, so we help them with food and beverage companies,” said JJ Greer of the Memphis Sports Council. Greer says his team is purchasing blocks of hotel rooms not only for the Memphis Showboats, but also for the Houston Gamblers, who will play at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium this season. He also says the new team is a great way to showcase the city’s multimillion-dollar sports investment that was unveiled late last year. “The USFL is really a great introduction, a great milestone in this new development at Liberty Park,” Greer said. The USFL coming to Memphis could play an important part in Memphis’ promotion of its reputation as a sports town, but only time will tell if Memphians will support the year-round pro football league.

“This city is showing up and representing, and we’ve seen that on a number of occasions, not just football, but basketball,” White said. The Memphis Showboats were part of the original USFL in 1984 and 1985, fast forward nearly 40 years and now the city has elite NCAA and NBA teams that garner a lot of attention from sports fans this time of year. But Memphians also showed their love for football. “Football is really a year-round sport. College football and the NFL are relatively short, and as Americans we love football,” Greer said. The Memphis Showbots are hoping to hit the practice field next week. Memphis Showboat tickets are on sale now.
