Jacobson named Associate Head Coach at Weber State Published 6:15 pm Thursday, January 8, 2026 Tanner Jacobson, who led TJC to its best record since 1960, has been named Associate Head Coach at Weber State University, new Wildcat Head Coach Eric Kjar announced on Thursday. Jacobson said he was leaving Tyler Junior College last week after leading the Apaches to the Southwest Junior College Football Conference championship and a berth in the NJCAA national playoffs in 2025. The Texan will also be the Special Teams Coordinator and coach the WSU linebackers. Jacobson, a former player at Texas Tech and BYU, comes to WSU after spending the last four seasons as the head coach in Tyler. “Tanner comes to us with a lot of coaching and recruiting experience,” Kjar said. “He has been a successful head coach for the last four years, which will be a benefit and support for us. He has ties to Utah as a coach and a player and will be a great fit for our program.” In his four seasons, Jacobson led the Apaches to 28 wins, won two conference championships, and was twice named the conference Coach of the Year. In 2025, he led the team to an 11-1 record and to the semifinals of the NJCAA Playoffs.

At Tyler, he coached 19 junior college All-Americans, two conference MVPs, and one National Defensive Player of the Year. Before coaching at Tyler, Jacobson served as an assistant coach at Snow College for two seasons, where he held the position of Special Teams Coordinator and coached the defensive backs. With the Badgers, he coached three All-Americans and a National Defensive Player of the Year. He also spent two years as a defensive assistant at BYU. “I’m really excited for the opportunity to work with Coach Kjar and be at Weber State,” Jacobson said. “I’ve always been a fan from afar of Weber State and FCS football, and have seen the winning tradition and the players and coaches that have come through here. Weber State is in a great location, and I’m fired up to be back in Utah and working and recruiting with the staff here.” TJC Athletic Director Doug Wren hated to see Jacobson leave Apache Land. “We’re sad to see Coach Jacobson leave, but we are extremely thankful for the time he spent leading our football program,” Wren said. “Tanner certainly left his mark at TJC in just four short years and will always have a special place in TJC football history. We wish him, Beth, and Halle nothing but the best as they embark on this new adventure.

” A national search is underway for the program’s next head football coach. A native of Southlake, Jacobson began his college playing career at Texas Tech in 2013, where he played in 13 games as a freshman and was named to the All-Bowl team at the Holiday Bowl. He then played three seasons at BYU from 2016 to 2018, and appeared in 37 games with the Cougars as a defensive back. He totaled 62 tackles with one interception in his career. He graduated from BYU in 2018 with a degree in Economics. He and his wife Beth are the parents of one daughter, Halle. At Southlake Carroll High School, Jacobson played defensive back while earning all-state honors and helping the Dragons to the state championship.
