County BOE honors Teachers of the Year
Escambia County BOE named Amanda Shivers and Anna Newton Teachers of the Year and advanced them to state Teacher of the Year selection, amid board honors and key approvals.
Two Escambia County Schools teachers were honored by the Escambia County Board of Education Thursday.
Named as Elementary Teacher of the Year for the county was Amanda Shivers. Shivers is a teacher at Huxford Elementary School and was joined in the recognition by Huxford Principal Leah Fuqua.
Named Secondary Teacher of the Year was Anna Newton, who teaches at W.S. Neal High School. Principal Todd Williamson joined Newton for the honor on Thursday.
Both Shivers and Newton will be presented for the State Teacher of the Year selection set for later this month.
Members of the Board were also honored Thursday with an array of gifts and well-wishes for their work on behalf of students, faculty and staff throughout the county.
W.S. Neal High School hosted the annual honor for board members complete with food, drinks and additional gifts. Alabama One Credit Union contributed to and sponsored the reception for board members.
In other business Thursday, BOE members
• recognized monthly employees for November and December including Sharee Davis, Samantha Cash, Daniel Hodge, Shannon Martin, Haley White, Elizabeth Taylor, Michelle Brantley and Jessica Green;
• heard from Reid State Community College President Coretta Boykin who thanked the board for their partnership in the Dual Enrollment programs throughout the county;
• approved of out of state travel for the Superintendent to attend AASA National Conference on Education from February 12, 2026 through February 14, 2026 in Nashville, TN
• approval of out of state trip for Flomaton High School band for performance at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida from April 30, 2026 through May 3, 2026
• approval of out of state trip for Flomaton High School senior class to attend the Audobon Zoo & Aquarium in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 11, 2026
• approval of overnight trip for Escambia County High School wrestling team to attend tournament in Montgomery, Alabama on February 5, 2026 through February 7, 2026
• approval of overnight trip for Escambia County High School wrestling team to attend tournament in Huntsville, Alabama on February 12, 2026 through February 14, 2026
• approval of out of state trip for seniors at Escambia County High School to Universal Orlando on 04/30/2026 through 05/01/2026.
• approval of overnight trip for Escambia Career Readiness Center on April 20 through 22 in Birmingham for SkillsUSA competition;
• approval to purchase School Status Essentials + Attend Hybrid subscription effective from March 2026 through July 2027 in the amount of $71,993.69 (Paid out of A&T funds)
• approval of Dual Enrollment for Dual Credit agreement between Escambia County Schools and Reid State Community College
• approval of contract with Pitts Dozer Service for demolition and repair of structural wall in girls bathroom at Pollard McCall Junior High School in the amount of $50,380.00 (Paid out of A & T funds)
• approval of purchase of custodial supplies from Imperial Dade in the amount of $61,888.98 (Paid out of general maintenance/ FY 25 A&T funds)
• approval of contract between Cintas Corporation and Escambia County Schools for biweekly mat service effective January 29, 2026 through January 29, 2029 in the amount of $2,958 per month. (Paid out of general maintenance FY A & T funds)
• approval to purchase a crisis management alert system and enhanced visitor management program from Centegix in the amount of $130,500 annually for five years (Paid yearly from A&T Funds).
• approved the install of new Centegix crisis management system equipment (one time upgrade) for $45,000 (Paid from FY25 A & T).
• approval of contract with West Instructional Services, LLC for ACT Intensive Training Classes for the juniors at Escambia County High School in the amount of $13,650.00 (Paid out of College and Career Readiness grant)
• approval of contract with Construction Managers, LLC for installation of stucco for WS Neal High School Softball Concession in the amount of $26,364.00 (Paid out of A&T funds)
• approved the expulsion of a W.S. Neal High School Student for a period of up to one (1) calendar year for violation of the Escambia County School System Board Policy/Student Code of Conduct. The Superintendent will allow student to receive educational services through Escambia County Virtual School;
• approved the following personnel recommendations:
Retirement: Spencer (Todd) Williamson as principal at W.S. Neal High School effective June 30, 2026; and Susan Cooper, bus driver at Brewton Bus Shop, effective Jan 30, 2026;
Resignations: Charlene Dailey, teacher at A.C. Moore Primary School; Kenneth Jones, teacher at Escambia County High School; Tucker McDaniel, math teacher at Escambia County Middle; Polly Corneilson, custodian at Huxford Elementary; Beverly Maye, teacher at Rachel Patterson Elementary; Claudie Smith, elementary teacher at W.
