Orange jazzes it up for Mardi Gras Saturday
Nothing starts a big Mardi Gras party better than and brass Dixieland jazz band, and Oranges Saturday celebration begins with the Big Fun Brass Band from New Orleans.
A kids parade, the lighted Krewe of Krewes parade, food vendors, and purveyors of wine and beer will be in downtown Orange from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, February 7, for the 22nd Annual Mardi Gras on the Sabine. Admission is free.
Grammy-winner Wayne Toups and his unique zydeco music will cap off the evening beginning at 8:30 p.m. from the Riverfront Pavilion on Division Avenue along the parade route.
The gates will open along the Riverfront Pavilion area at 2 p.m. Saturday with kids activities available from 2 to 6 p.m. The Big Fun Brass Band will lead a New Orleans Second Line march beginning at 2:30 p.m. in front of the Krewe de Kids parade.
The second line has people marching and dancing along to the jazz, waving handkerchiefs and colorful umbrellas.
The Krewe de Kids parade has youngsters with decorated strollers, trikes, bikes, and wagons, or some simply marching, as they throw trinkets and beads to the crowd lining the streets. The Krewe de Krewe parade will start on Front Street east of the Orange Public Library, and then travel west along Front to Fifth Street, where it will turn south to Division and the Pavilion.
The Big Fun Brass Band will then play for the crowd at the Pavilion until 6 p.m., when the Krewe de Krewes parade begins.
The Krewe de Krewes parade this year will have Dr. Russell and Temple Perry as King and Queen wearing their elaborate white and gold costumes. Dukes and duchesses for the krewes are Andre and Lanier Robertson, Raul and Geneva Cortez, Chris and Cheryl Taylor, and Terri and Brad Childs. They will also be featured on floats.
The Orange Krewe de Krewes parade is known throughout the area for throwing lots of beads and trinkets to families along the parade route.
The floats and the rest of the parade, including decorated cars and marching bands, will stage at the Orange Boat Ramp off Simmons Drive. The Boat Ramp will be closed for launches that day to accommodate the parade. Orange Countys Blue Bird Park boat launch is nearby off Simmons Drive.
The parade will start at 6 p.m. and travel south down Simmons to Green Avenue, where it will turn west and then turn south on First Street.
From First Street, the parade will then proceed westward along Front Street and Lamar State College Orange, plus the Orange Public Library. At Fifth Street, the parade will turn south and then head a block to Division Avenue.
At Division, the parade will go westward past the Orange County Courthouse and Heritage House Museum, before turning north onto 10th Street. At Green Avenue, the parade will then travel eastward on Green until it ends again at Simmons.
The Four Horses band will play at the Riverfront Pavilion on Division Avenue at 7 p.m., with Wayne Toups and his band taking the stage at 8:30 p.m.
People should bring lawn chairs to sit at the pavilion and listen to the music. The VFW Orange will have a beer booth to sell the beverage, plus the Free State Winery of Orange will be selling their wares.
No dogs or coolers are allowed in the pavilion area.
Mardi Gras on the Sabine is sponsored by the City of Orange Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce.
