KU students protest Monday night as Lawrence police investigate sexual assault Sexual assault allegedly happened at a fraternity Sexual assault allegedly happened at a fraternity Sexual assault allegedly happened at a fraternity Police in Lawrence are investigating a sexual assault near the University of Kansas over the weekend. On Monday night, about 1,500 people gathered for the peaceful protest outside the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, where the assault allegedly happened. Demonstrators said they wanted to show support for the survivor and to send a message to end sexual assault. Posts on social media claim the woman was drugged and then sexually assaulted. Police said they do not comment on locations or provide details about incidents involving sexual assaults to protect the privacy of victims. The leader of the fraternity house said the person in question has been removed while the investigation is being done. He said the fraternity does not condone any behavior like this. The national Phi Kappa Psi chapter released a statement saying in part, Phi Kappa Psi takes these allegations very seriously and will fully cooperate with law enforcement. The University of Kansas requires all incoming freshmen to take sexual violence prevention training.
The National Sexual violence resource center says one in five women are sexually assaulted while in college. Its absolutely horrible that this sort of stuff happens on campus, student Noah Mruckovski said. It honestly scares me and I think more people need to be more educated, student Angie Korsh said. This is all about creating a stand and saying that this is not OK no matter what. I think its really focusing more on the fact that the community supports the girl, student Anna Trumbo said. The protesters have created a Change.org petition asks that Phi Kappa Psi be removed from campus. So far more than 2,000 people have signed it.
