BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( [WIAT](https://www.cbs42.com/)) — Alabama state Rep. Juandalynn Givan will hold a town hall meeting Monday to address Birmingham-Southern College closing May 31. [BSC announced it will shut down after a BSC Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday](https://www.cbs42.com/news/local/birmingham-southern-college-closing-its-doors-may-31/). The news came after BSC officials stated in 2023 the college was in $38 million of debt. Alabama Treasurer Young Boozer denied a loan to the school in October, [citing the institution as a “terrible credit risk.”](https://www.cbs42.com/news/local/birmingham-southern-college-responds-to-claims-made-by-alabama-state-treasurer-boozer/) State Sen. [Jabo Waggoner sponsored a bill to extend a loan to BSC early in 2024’s legislative session](https://www.cbs42.com/news/politics/proposed-alabama-bill-aims-to-amend-higher-education-loan-program/), but it didn’t earn enough support. According to press release from Givan, she plans to discuss with residents what BSC closing will mean for the area. “I don’t think legislators or state leaders understand or appreciate what will happen when the college closes,” Givan said in a statement.
“Businesses in Bush Hills, Fairview, College Hills, and other nearby neighborhoods are going to be hurt financially because the Legislature wouldn’t pass the loan bill.” The meeting will take place in A.H.
